Good base for your Australia holiday
The state of South Australia is on the south coast of Australia. Most inhabitants live in urban and agricultural areas along the coast south of Port Augusta. Only 1 percent live in the rest of the state, the arid and vast outback.
Stuart Highway
The most important and interesting place in South Australia's capital Adelaide. It connects international airport Adelaide with Europe and the spot you can go either way. All in all, Adelaide is an excellent starting point for your holiday.
From Port Augusta, 320 km northwest of Adelaide, the 2834 km starts long Stuart Highway which South Australia connects the remarkable opal town of Coober Pedy where mine shafts to underground homes have been transformed, Uluru (Ayers Rock), Alice Springs, Katherine and endpoint Darwin the Northern Territory.
The Stuart Highway, also known as The Track, is named after John McDouall Stuart, the first European to Australia from south to north crossed. Only since the 80s, the highway completely paved. Every 2 years the road is the setting for a race between vehicles on solar energy, the World Solar Challenge.
Kangaroo Island
Little penguins, seals and sea lions, goanna, koalas, wallabies, kangaroos and more. Due to the isolated location of Kangaroo Island you will find animals and plants that otherwise hardly occur. The coastline is a series of steep cliffs, coves and sandy beaches. A part of the island consists of pastures, but most of it is conservation area. Thus, the rock formations Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks worth a visit.
Kangaroo Island is about as big as Luxembourg and can be reached by ferry from Cape Jervis (approximately 1.5 hours drive from Adelaide). Most roads on the island are gravel roads or dirt tracks but overall it ride with ordinary cars. Only a small portion is paved ( "bitumen road"). On the island live only 5000 people that live from tourism. Animals Australia +.
Flinders Ranges
National Park in South Australia
Many places in South Australia are named after the explorers explored areas beginning in 1800 and demanded the country. Similarly Matthew Flinders of the British Royal Navy. The 900km2 National Park Flinders Ranges is named after him.
Wilpena Pound is a huge natural amphitheater formed and can be beautiful view during a flight over the Ranges. The fens and the gum trees in the Ranges are special.
