The city, however, was abandoned in 1287 by the residents for fear of the Mongols who came to conquer the city. Partly because the temples are barely damaged: the city was already abandoned when the Mongols came. An earthquake in 1975 unfortunately caused much damage to the temples. However, it is largely repaired. Bagan today is again inhabited by some 20,000 people which work mainly in hotels that are caused by tourism.
