Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital of Brunei, located in the north of Brunei. The town consists of two parts, namely from Bandar Seri Begawan and from Kampong Ayer. Bandar Seri Begawan only consists of about 22,000 inhabitants. Along with this there are 46,000 Kampong Ayer. About It is the most populous city of Brunei and was inhabited as early as the 7th century. Bandar Seri Begawan is an important economic city of Brunei. History
The history of Bandar Seri Begawan dates back to the 7th century when the first settlers built a town along the Brunei River. The residents of Kampong Ayer traded and fished to survive. The settlement moved twice before it landed on the present site. The population that lived around the 16th century in the city would be around 25,000. The city would later have a decline in population due to wars and migrations.
By the end of the 19th century, Brunei became a protectorate of the British Empire. In 1906 Malcolm McArthur became the first British Resident of Brunei and he immediately began making plans to further develop the country. He advised the population to migrate to the left bank of the Brunei River and Chinese traders and the sultan followed his advice. A Municipal Council was created in 1921 to oversee the expansion of the city and this resulted in the construction of various public institutions for private housing and areas.
During World War II Brunei Town was at its height in terms of expansion. Just before the end of the war, Allied forces invaded the city. This resulted in severe damage by heavy bombing. The government began rebuilding the city after the war, these repairs would take a total of more than two decades. The name Brunei Town was changed in 1970 in Bandar Seri Begawan. 'Bandar' means' harbor 'in Persian and "Begawan' means' god 'in Sanskrit. Brunei was the most time of the 20th century a British colony, and only in 1984 it became an independent state. Bandar Seri Begawan then continued to expand and is now known as one of the most prosperous cities of Borneo.
Transportation in Brunei
The Brunei International Airport is located about twenty minutes drive from Bandar Seri Begawan off. A fun way to get around the city is by water taxi. The best way to find one is at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah mall or at the market. Because Kampong Ayer in the water is built, a water taxi also advised if you want to explore this area. You can just travel on the paved road with the bus; the cheapest way to get around the city. You can along the route on or off, you do this just to make it clear to the conductor. There are also buses to other major cities in Brunei. Another way to get around with the car. From here you can market also arrange a boat trip that takes you to the water village Kampong Ayer.
