Coober Pedy, Living underground
Along the Stuart Highway, in the sweltering outback of South Australia, is Coober Pedy. In and around the mining town is mined in the opal soil. Upon entering the mining town a bit strange. Not strange that here the adventure film Mad Max was recorded. Everywhere you see heaps of rubble remains of the mines and warning signs for deep wells. But instead of putting some miners build their shaft also at home. Because of the heat in the summer it is too hot above ground, but below ground cool. Only the ventilation shafts and a tree on a cushioned pit of wastewater reveals that people living here.
Underground squash
The underground dwellings are within often surprisingly large and in summer and winter a comfortable indoor temperature. Is there any extra room, the miners heels just a room with and with a little luck, the conversion may be paid from the opal found.
There is a story of two neighbors who had a relationship. The rocks between the cave houses were blown down, and the houses were merged. However, the woman was much smaller and had a much lower house which created a strange house.
Furthermore you can find underground churches, a squash court and a hotel.
Golf course
Golfing in Coober Pedy can too - only there is a great lack of grass. Therefore you will find here the greatest rock golf course in the country. The ball will search only sometimes be difficult, therefore they are in striking colors - or useful indicator for when it is dark.
Dingo fence
The biggest gate in the world is from South-Australia to Queensland, a distance of 5615 km. Near Cooper Pedy you can see the fence.
