Gambia
Gambia is a republic with a president as head of state since April 26, 1970 who is also head of government. Gambia has one room (National Assembly), with 45 members elected by the people for five years. That there are as many as there are administrative regions (45). The National Assembly will be expanded to eight members who have no voting rights: the Minister of Justice, a chairman, a deputy chairman and five alternate members. Also, there are five district heads (Chiefs) in the National Assembly.
In 1964 there were general elections for the first time. Elections are like held in England according to another district system. Gambia is administratively divided into six "divisions" (provinces). These are divided into 45 districts.
Education
Slightly more than a quarter of the population has completed a school. A much higher percentage can read and write. There is no compulsory education, and it also does not matter when children first go to school. Usually at age five or six. Further education is only followed by 25% of children in rural areas. The six-year primary education is free. It is mandatory to wear a school uniform, which costs must be paid by the parents. There are both private schools financed schools by the government. On the mostly Islamic schools taught the Koran, and therefore attending classes Arabic compulsory.
In the interior are still mission schools. The middle and high schools calculate their costs entirely by the parents. Secondary education is divided into three years' junior secondary school. " Then it can be even more on the "senior secondary school".
Senior programs take an average of five years. Higher means in the case of Gambia administrative training and technical education. HBO programs and university education is not yet possible, to do this one must still abroad.
Although the number of schools is growing rapidly, there is a chronic shortage. There are more than 200 schools for primary education. About 70,000 children attend this school. There are 25 high schools and 10 schools of higher education. Only 15,000 pupils attend secondary school and even fewer, 1500 students pursue higher education.
Gambia Religion
Gambia is a largely Muslim country. Around 90% of the population is Muslim. About 10% of the population belongs to the Roman Catholic or Anglican Church. There are also small groups of Methodists and Seventh-Day Adventists. Animism is the belief formally disappeared. Animism is a oergeloof where it is believed that all earthly things such as trees, animals or even stones, have their own spiritual power. Yet it still survives to some extent, even among Muslims and Christians. Superstition also plays a role.
Because according to Islam men can have up to four wives, is particularly regularly for domestically polygamy. In the cities, this is much, much less the case.
