Kaohsiung is the largest city after Taipei in Taiwan, located in the south of the island. The city gives a good picture of Taiwan's economy. The city has a large international port and is an important industrial center of Taiwan.
Kaohsiung was originally a rather modest town but has experienced rapid economic growth. A considerable amount of pollution caused by the high concentration of heavy industry is located in the city produced. Hoping to dispel the heavy industry from the center to the outskirts of the city, the local government is trying to encourage especially the high-tech and service industries to settle in the center of Kaohsiung. Today, pollution is a lot less so the quality of life of the city has become similar to that of Taipei.

As in Taipei is located in Kaohsiung one of the two international airports of the island.
History
Kaohsiung is the last years impressive economic growth through, for about two centuries ago it was no more than a fishing village. The Japanese colonial regime dredged the channel between the island and Quijin Kaohsiung, widened the mouth of the harbor area and built the first breakwater. And as heavy industry in Kaohsiung, typical of the city is developed, multiplied the population more and more. Kaohsiung was internationally seen a boost in 2009 when the eighth World Games, an international sporting event for disciplines that do not belong to the Olympic Games were held in the city.

* The Lotus lake, there are several temples and pagodas in and around this lake.
* The 'Love River': this river is known for the Dragon Boat Festival.
* The Foguangshan monastery: about an hour's drive to the north of Kaohsiung this beautiful Buddhist monastery which is certainly worth a visit.
* Holy Rosary Cathedral: the only monastery in Taiwan, built in 1928 in Gothic-Romantic style.
* Tuntex Sky Tower: giant skyscraper which until 2003 was the world's tallest building from 1997.
* The Kaohsiung historical museum.
