Costa Rica is located in Central America, bordering Panama and Nicaragua. Costa Rica is truly a natural country and has more than 30 nature reserves. More than 20% of the country is protected. A visit to one of this nature is therefore a must. Costa Rica also has more than 200 species of mammals and more than 30,000 species of insects.

The landscape of Costa Rica consists largely of mountains. Middle by Costa Riva from Nicaragua to Panama walk several mountain ranges; Central Cordillera, Cordillera de Tilarán, Cordillera de Guanacaste and Cordillera de Talamanca. The mountain ranges are between 1500 and 3820 m high. Cerro Chirripó (3820 m) is the highest mountain in Costa Rica.

Coffee and bananas are economically important products that are grown in Costa Rica. They are mainly intended for export, as well as pineapple, sugarcane and sisal. Tourism has undergone rapid development and has quickly become the mainstay of the economy. The country has responded well to the ecotrend in tourism. Approximately 30% of the tourists come from Europe. 

History
In 1502 Columbus set foot ashore. He named the land Costa Rica (rich coast) because he got a lot of gold from the residents. Later this name was chosen as the official country name. Before Columbus arrived, there lived mainly Indians.

People & culture
The vast majority of the population (about 95%) is white or mestizo (mixed white and Indian blood). Besides this majority Costa Rica has a number of minorities. The main ones are the Indians and Negroes but also Chinese, Italian and American Quakers. Of one people in there in Costa Rica actually no. One feels Tico (Costa Rican) or Tica (Costa Rican) yet also European, Asian or Afro-Caribbean. There are never slaves introduced in Costa Rica and that is quite unique. The population is unevenly distributed across the country. The majority live in the Central Valley, the plateau.

Primary education is compulsory, but many children then leave same school. This happens often forced to help the family income supplement and sometimes there is no secondary school in the neighborhood. The quality of education is poor.

Language
Spanish that is spoken in Latin America differs in pronunciation and vocabulary a little from the Spanish in Spain. In Costa Rica and clearly spoken Spanish is easy to understand.

Safety
Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in Central America. But it is a developing country with a lot of problems. So be always on your belongings and go in the dark not only on the street.

Medical Information
The quality of medical care is good in Costa Rica. If possible go to a private hospital or clinic.
Immunizations
Vaccinations are recommended for certain areas. For current advice please contact the Public Health Service, Travel Clinic or the Tropical Centre.

Visa
For a stay (business or vacation) shorter than 90 days do not need a visa for Costa Rica. Upon presentation of a valid passport and return ticket you get a tourist visa stamped in their passport upon arrival.

Price
The price level in Costa Rica is in many cases lower than in the Netherlands.

Transport
Transportation to the country
Several airlines fly to the capital, San Jose. A direct flight from Schiphol Airport takes about 12.5 hours, but usually you have to change the way.
Transport in the country
Costa Rica is a small country, most destinations are within a day. Costa Rica has a good road network. The Inter-Americana is the longest highway and runs from north to south.
Travelling by bus is cheap and well organized. During long journeys using comfortable buses.
Would you like San José use a taxi, please do the red taxi`s. They are required to use a taximeter.

Flora & Fauna
The flora and fauna in this country is perhaps the richest on earth. More than 20% of the country is under nature. These are tropical rainforests, green rain forests, cloud forests and volcanoes.

In Costa Rica over 12,000 different plant species. Thanks to the diverse climates, altitude and soil every region has a different face with a characteristic vegetation.

Costa Rica has more than 200 species of mammals and more than 30,000 species of insects. In Costa Rica live four species of monkeys: howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys and spider monkeys (such as spider monkeys).
