Lesser Antilles are divided into the Windward Islands (Windward Islands) and the Leeward Islands (Leeward Islands). Bonaire belongs, along with Aruba and Curacao to the Leeward Islands. Bonaire with its 288km2 the second largest island of the Netherlands Antilles. The shape of the island looks like a boomerang. History
Before the Spanish in 1499 Bonaire discovered, the island was inhabited by Arawaks and the Caiquetio Indians. The Caiquetios Indians came originally from the South American continent and lived here mainly from fishing.

In 1513 the island was the Spaniards no longer useful and they took almost the entire Indian population of the island. From 1526 a part of the original population came back to Bonaire to keep livestock for the Spaniards on the island. The rest of the 16th century did the island also serves as a kind of exile for Spaniards.

In 1634 Bonaire was conquered by the Netherlands led by Johan van Walbeeck. From this time, the extraction of salt and paint timber, livestock and corn culture brought further developed. Many slaves were brought to the island to do the heavy lifting.

In the early 19th century, Bonaire twice for a short time by the British occupied, but in 1816 the island was finally returned to the Dutch. In 1863, all slaves on Bonaire got their freedom back.

People & culture
The culture in the Leeward Islands is a hodgepodge of African, North American, European and Latin American influences. Safety
Compared with the other countries of the Netherlands Antilles there is a very low crime levels in Bonaire. This is partly because there are few unemployed and the training of residents of Bonaire is higher than that of the other islands. Of course there is crime, beware you will have to keep doing it. Medical Information

Kralendijk is a hospital with qualified personnel. If the hospital can not help that there is always an ambulance plane waiting to take you to Curacao.

Visa
Anyone with a Dutch passport to go for vacation or business or family visit to the so-called Kingdom Sharing in the Caribbean, Caribbean do not need a visa. Parts of the Kingdom in the Caribbean, the countries Aruba, Curacao, St. Maarten and the Caribbean Netherlands (these are the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba).

The price level in Bonaire is higher than in the Netherlands.
The currency is the Antillean guilder.

Transport
Transportation to the country
Bonaire International Airport has for some years been independent and has the necessary track renewals and expansion behind it. Besides KLM also provides American Airlines subsidiary American Eagle a daily service between Puerto Rico and Bonaire.
Transport in the country
If you go to Bonaire you'll want to see more of the island than the airport and the accommodation. But there is no public transport on the island. The availability of taxis is limited. So if you want to see something then you're on your own temporary transport and you will have to rent a car or a scooter.

Flora & Fauna
Saliñas its salt lakes or inlets that are closed by a barrier of dead coral from the sea. The Saliñas an important role in ensuring the collection and filtration of (rain) water. This prevents nutrients and soil particles rinse the reef in and damage the coral. Especially during heavy rainfall, this is very important. Salinas are also an important feeding area for several species of waterfowl.
