Chile lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains and bordered by Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. Chile, in the language of the original inhabitants' Country where the earth ends. To the territory of Chile are also among the Pacific Islands Juan Fernandez and Easter Island. These two exotic islands are respectively 670 km and 3000 km from the coast.

Chile has a varied landscape. That is largely due to the different climates and by the elongated shape of the country. Chile is namely 4000 km long and no wider than 150 km.

History
In pre-Columbian times Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego were very sparsely populated areas. The few indigenous peoples (the Mapuche Indians of Araucania and the Tierra del Fuego Indians in the extreme south) lived primarily as hunters and gatherers for adverse conditions for agriculture.

In the middle of the 16th century the northern part of present Chile was conquered by the Spaniards. The south was fierce and impenetrable, furthermore, the Mapuches were warlike state.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the country became independent and the Mapuche were subjected. Southern Chile was then opened and colonized by thousands of Chilean and European settlers. Chile knew, although the first South American country with a parliament and a democratically elected president, periods of instability and unrest. This was due to a weak economy and a great social inequality. Since 1990, Chile has another legally elected president. People & culture

The huaso is a Chilean cowboy that has existed for centuries. They drive the cattle together on estancia`s. In many areas they still do this. The huasos wear on many occasions their traditional costume consisting of a colored short poncho, wide flat Cordoba-straw hat and riding boots with silver spurs.

Chilean rodeo is a typical combination of sports, traditions and folklore, which has been practiced for over 400 years. Especially in the central valley and in the south of Chile, this is very popular and is even regarded as the national sport. It is an equestrian sport in which the aim is to show that as a couple you can chase a young bull with two horses and can drive to where you want it.

Cueca in Chile national (conquest) dance. This dance has a rich history and has roots in both the African and Indian cultures. The movements of the Cueca consist of moving back and forth in half-circles and turned towards the partner and back away from him / her. The dancers hold a handkerchief over their heads, which symbolize the feathers of a rooster. The Cueca is therefore a parody of the courtship of a hen and rooster.

Mapuche are the largest (live) indigenous population in Chile. The Mapuche people consists of different groups. The daily life of the Mapuche is strongly associated with religion and some ceremonies.

The Folk Art (artesanía) in Chile one of the many cultural expressions, which testifies to the band of people with their country and nature. It is very diverse and has its roots in the traditions of the various pre-Columbian cultures. Some forms of artesanía; pottery, carpentry, blacksmith and weaving.

Chile flag was designed in 1817 by an American painter. Blue symbolizes the sky, white snow of the Andes and the red blood that is shed in the struggle for freedom. 5 Star rays represent the original five provinces.

Language
In Chile Spanish is spoken. Spanish is different from Spanish as it is spoken in Spain. Spanish in Chile is less fierce and there is often spoken slightly faster than in other Latin American countries. There are also quite a lot of Chilean own words.

Safety
Most Chilean cities are fairly safe, but as in every town are also areas where you need good looking. Do not take valuables, travel documents and a lot of money in my pocket. Especially at airports, at bus stations, in cities or in other public places you need to be wary of pickpockets.

Medical Information
The quality of the medical care is good. There are a number of good hospitals and private clinics. There are also many English-speaking doctors.

Visa
With a Dutch passport do not need a visa for a holiday in Chile, only a passport that after returning to the Netherlands is still valid for 6 months. The buses are punctual, fast and affordable. Long distance buses are comfortable and usually leave on time. The luxury buses you can even buy a meal. In most cities, a bus terminal, where you can enter and exit. Furthermore, you can travel by train or boat. If you want more freedom, you can rent a car. The roads between major cities are well paved, but in the interior are many dirt roads that are sometimes in very poor condition by torrential rains.

Flora & Fauna
The nature of Chile is very diverse and much of it is protected in national parks. In the northern desert regions and the steppes of Patagonia is almost no vegetation for. At the edges of the Atacama Desert have come cacti and shrubs. South central Chile can be found in bush areas and grass species that change into lianas, ferns, mosses and coniferous and deciduous trees.
