Biography
The fascination of Mary Gabriel for the personal lives of Karl Marx stems from the observation of a gap. She read somewhere that two of his three daughters committed suicide. Never knew, Gabriel thought. The third went to anorexia perish, but that she would discover later. Gabriel describes in a voluminous biography her search for the man behind Capital and The Communist Manifesto. The somewhat disappointing conclusion that Karl Marx was even a man does not diminish the beauty of that quest.
Jenny von Westphalen
Marx was already in seventeenth imbued with a deep social awareness that personal perfection can only be underpinned 'by working to perfection, for the good of his fellow men. "Jenny von Westphalen, the love of his life, he had already met . She was of noble birth, he was the son of Jewish shopkeeper. Marx was right at home at the Von Westphalens and came into contact with the radical Enlightenment thinkers of the French Revolution. By his future father He married Jenny in 1843, after he was able to provide for their livelihood as a journalist for Die Rheinische Zeitung. His radicalization made his position in the repressive Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm IV untenable. The couple fled to Paris, well in time to the run-up to and be able to make it. Outbreak of the revolution in 1848
Friedrich Engels
Friedrich Engels, his companion for life, he knew at that moment three years. Gabriel describes him as a loving bon vivant and womanizer, who did not care about public morality, but above all as the almost unconditional support of Karl Marx and support. English was his friend financially when needed to keep the creditors of his body, and that happened in warp and weft. Above all, he avoided a crisis of faith in the house of Marx. In a letter from 1851 Marx mentions a little problem threatens to bring down his bastion of devotion. He has an affair with the housekeeper made, with all its consequences. English gets his buddy the hot coals from the fire: he acknowledges to be the father of the illegitimate child.
Tragic legacy
The family was ceremoniously behind Karl Marx, even if that choice implied a life of persecution and poverty. Jenny swallowed the misery in all ootmoet because she was convinced of the historical mission that had to fulfill her husband. His daughters junior Jenny (Jenny Chen), Laura and Eleanor (Tussy) stencilled with a vengeance when the proletarians of all countries should agree reunited. Acknowledged Only on his deathbed that he only English at Tussy Marx the father of the illegitimate child. Was not When he won revealed that her unscrupulous lover Edward Aveling a secret marriage was entered into with a younger actress, she ended her life. Laura's death raises more questions. She was lifeless in her home found, just like her husband Paul Lafargue, who states in his farewell note to wish the'meedogenloze ouderdom' but it does not mention whether this choice was shared by his wife.
Loving rank
Marx's life was based on a solid home: a faithful wife, a friend like rock in the surf and radical three daughters, who are fully presented his work and legacy in service. Before you think that Love and capital only there about: Gabriel knows outline the impoverishment of the East Enders in London, explains clearly the principles of Marxism and pulls some disturbing parallels with the current developments in the world of capital. How current is Marx? He crawls under the remains of the Berlin Wall come from? Anyway, Love and capital is a beautiful biography, which should not be unread. Love and capital.
