Gambia (officially: Republic of The Gambia) lies on the western tip of Africa to the Atlantic Ocean. Gambia has an area of 11,295 km2, the smallest country on the African continent. Gambia is slightly larger than North Brabant and Gelderland together.
From East to West Gambia measures about 320 km. From north to south the width varies from 20 to 50 km. Gambia is surrounded by Senegal on three sides. The landscape is gently sloping with some hills. The highest point is about 40 meters, and Gambia is that still flatter than the Netherlands. Across the country runs the navigable river Gambia.
The Gambia River carries water throughout the year. Along the coast are many sandy beaches. The delta of the Gambia River is quite a swampy mangrove vegetation. The north of the Gambia has a parkland savanna landscape with long grasses, large shrubs and some trees. South of the Gambia River begins the forest savannah, grassland with groups of trees.
