Comoros ( French Comores, Comoros: Komori, Arabic: Al Qamar) form a state composed of three main islands and several smaller islands in the Indian Ocean (Africa). The three major islands Grande Comore (Ngazidja), Mohéli (Mevali) and Anjouan (Narvani). Comoros together with Mayotte (French overseas island) the Comoros archipelago. The Comoros name comes from the Arabic "Djazair al Kamar" which means "Moon Island". In 1975, the Comoros became independent of France. The capital of the Comoros is Moroni. A number of major cities in the Comoros are: Mutsamudu, Domoni and Fomboni.
The Comoros are known for the various rainforests, volcanoes, grasslands and many mountains. The highest mountain (volcano) is the "Le Kartala" with a height of 2,360 meters and is located on Grande Comore. The Comoros islands are ideal for diving. You will find among other things, coral reefs, tropical fish, dolphins, sharks and rays.
