Taiwan
Taipei is the bustling capital of Taiwan, located in the north of the island. The city has about 2.6 million inhabitants and is clean, well organized and busy but not overcrowded. The inhabitants of the city are friendly and helpful as the entire population of Taiwan and if you speak English you come a long way.
The center of Taipei can be divided into two. On the west side there are especially many narrow streets where small shops are located. The cozy atmosphere there is, gives a good picture of the original Taiwanese lifestyle. The eastern side of the city is modern and you will find some stylish shopping and good restaurants and cafes.
History
In the 17th century, Han Chinese migrants came to Taiwan and settled near the coast. They moved slowly but surely further inland. The indigenous people who lived there at that time, were forced to cede their land to the Han Chinese. First, the people lived with the Han Chinese population together, but eventually the indigenous peoples still separated themselves from the Han Chinese.
In 1895 the Japanese Taipei are peaceful inside. The colonial regime broke down all the walls down in order to expand the city. The streets of Taipei were made law and was also commissioned by the regime to put anywhere in the city public buildings.
Taipei was for years seen as a temporary capital which would be to devise a plan for the reconquest of the mainland used. Because Taipei but a "temporary" capital would still be, invested little money in the public buildings, which the state of the city around the year 1980 was embarrassing. Was a major step only after the arrival of the subway system in 1996, forward and made the city got back a better view.
Sights
* The Confucius Temple: This temple is dedicated to the great scholar and reformer Confucius.
* The Longshan Temple: This temple dates back to 1738 and is dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin.
* The Aborigines Museum: This museum gives a good overview of the ethnic composition of Taiwan.
* The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall: This building is dedicated to Chiang Kai-shek, a nationalist who considered the founder of modern Taiwan. Many of the possessions of Chiang Kai-shek exhibited in this building.
* Taipei 101, the official name is Taipei International Financial Center 101 and was opened in 2004. The building is a tower which is 508 meters high and is in the form of a bamboo stalk. Until recently, this tower was the tallest building in the world.
* The National Palace Museum: This museum houses a large collection of Chinese art. The museum has many objects there are changing exhibitions per year.
* The Shilin Night Market: This is the most famous night market in Taipei. You can go there for clothes, medicines and especially for food. You will get a good impression of what the Taiwanese people Zoal like to eat.
* Bitan Park Xindian: This is a park on either side of the river Xindian and you can move from one part of the park to the other part run by a suspension bridge high above the river about stabbing. The part where this park is located, is the furthest from the center, but is a very popular area and therefore crowded.
The night markets in Taipei are a must visit. Is everything sold from clothing to medicine but food especially. You can taste everything and it smells delicious. The most famous night market is the Shilin Night Market (MRT Shilin). Are you looking for Chinese medicines and herbs, it's best to Dihua Market (MRT Zhongshan).
National Palace Museum
In Taipei is also the National Palace Museum. The museum is built in the style of a northern Chinese palace. You can get a large number of historical relics in the museum ended up by chance in Taiwan, visited. These relics belonging to various Chinese rulers for generations and it is the largest and most beloved collection of Chinese art in the world.

Visitors can also take a look at a demonstration of a Japanese tea ceremony.

Taipei has a cheap and excellent functioning subway system. There are five different lines that you can come in all corners of the city. The entire subway system is fully bilingual and accessible to disabled people.
