Indonesia's 17,504 islands with the largest archipelago in the world. The culture of the archipelago is an experience in itself. Indonesia has 215 million people from 200 different ethnic groups. The rich cultural diversity is reflected in traditional and modern music and dance, traditional temples and ways of life which differ from island or region. The people of Indonesia have their own customs and on a visit to Indonesia, it is therefore wise to take this into account. Thus, with the akimbo and arms stand together as symbolized evil and feet are considered unclean.
Bali
Bali is also called "the island of the gods" and is a major tourist destination with a rich blend of culture. The majority of the inhabitants of Bali is Hindu. The cultural capital of Ubud is surrounded by temples, jungle, rice fields and small villages. The ngaben ceremony today belongs to the cultural events that is very popular among tourists. It is a cremation ceremony held by the Balinese for their deceased relatives. Ngaben found as important as the ceremonies held for the living. Whatever falls under the cultural events is the popular art performance: Ketjak dance. The movements are largely performed by male dancers posing for a scene from the Ramayana.
Bintan & Batam
Bintan and Batam are the most famous islands of the Riau archipelago. The capital of Bintan is known as the former trading city boasts the Raja Haji Fisabillah monument. Up to half of the last century Batam inhabited by fishing communities but now makes the island way for new cities, mosques, churches, temples and supermarkets.
Jakarta
The Indonesian capital Jakarta is a symbol of the National Monument and is the center of business and government activities. In the capital, it is interesting to once again visit the 500 year old Sunda Kelapa Harbor, Fatahillah Museum, the National Museum and the Gadjah Museum.

Java island is seen as the Buddhist cultural treasure of Indonesia. The most special of Javanese culture is the Borobudur temple, which overlooks lush hills and green fields. The temple is the largest Buddhist monument in the world and stands since 1991 on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The temple is not only a special attraction for tourists, but also attracts many Indonesian Buddhists during the pilgrimage. The Yogyakarta Palace is worth a visit, which was designed by the Sultan himself. Besides Grebeg Sekaten is a famous ceremony which is held to spread Islam among the locals. As a tourist you can participate in batik classes where you get the opportunity to design their own batik pattern.
Maluku
Maluku is known for its cultural-preserved buildings. The most famous attraction is the VOC office. On this island you will find much of the Dutch culture.
Kalimantan
The traditional houses built Kalimantan island is famous tourist attraction the Muara Kuin Floating Market. This market is so special because the trade takes place in the djukung boats on the rivers of the island. From vegetables to household items, this market you will find really anything.
Papua
The best known is the cultural property of Papua Baliem Valley Festival. The festival is held annually on 17 August to commemorate Indonesia's Independence Day. During this festival demonstrate the villagers fighting between the villages with spears and arrows.
Sulawesi
On the island of Sulawesi is the construction of a Phinisiboot particular. In the village of Tana Beru you can see the building population Phinisiboten with traditional tools. The construction of each boat is preceded by a traditional ceremony. Another important ceremony of Sulawesi is the rambu taka, an annually held dankzeggingsceremonie.
