Bahamas consist of 700 islands located in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba and Haiti and the coast of Florida. The Bahamas archipelago is further divided into two oceanic groups, namely The Little Bahama Bank and the Great Bahama Bank. But 30 to 40 islands are inhabited. The islands of Grand Bahama and New Providence Paradise Island with its beautiful holiday destinations. In the Bahamas, the sun shines all year and the refreshing sea breeze creates a pleasant climate.

Nassau (New Providence) is the capital and here you will find colonial buildings, lively markets and various shopping streets. After sunset Nassau comes to life and a vibrant nightlife. Just outside Nassau you find great beaches, Cable Beach is by far the best known. History
When Columbus in 1492 was traveling to Asia and accidentally set foot he named the archipelago Baja Mar (shallow sea). This was later corrupted to Bahamas. The island of San Salvador claims that Columbus first arrived on the island, but can not say with certainty.

Already in 300 to 400 BC. different islands were inhabited by Indians, who came probably from Cuba. In the 10th century the Lucaya Indians themselves there. The majority of the inhabitants, about 85%, is descended from West African slaves. About 12% of the Bahamian population is white and comes from the British loyalists and Americans from the south. Transport
Transportation to the country
You can not fly directly to the Bahamas from the Netherlands. The most common route is via the United States. The two largest international airports are located on the islands of New Providence and Grand Bahama. The flight from Amsterdam to Florida takes about nine hours. The Bahamas are about an hour's flight from Florida.
You can also by boat from the United States, from Florida to go there `s 20 companies to the Bahamas.
Transport in the country

Flora & Fauna
