Older Mendut Temple Than Borobudur Temple

Magelang is the most tourist destinations close to Yogyakarta, these regions are also found in a wide variety of historical relics such as the tetanggangya, Yogyakarta. One of them is Mendut, size is not as Borobudur temple is however expected to have an older age compared to Borobudur.

Mendut temple was probably built during the reign of King Indra of Sailendra dynasty. In an inscription Inscription named Karangtengah dating from 824 AD, is told that the king Indra has built a shrine called wenuwana which means bamboo forests. An archaeologist from the Netherlands named JG de Casparis, connect these words with Mendut.

The location is very accessible because it is located alongside a road and not far from Borobudur Temple. Kayumwungan inscription is an inscription on five stone fragment found in Hamlet Karangtengah, Temanggung regency, Central Java, so it is also known as Karangtengah inscription. This inscription is written with Javanese script, using two languages. Rows 1-24 written in Sanskrit, the next line is written Javanese language. Each language refers to the numbers in 746 Saka or 824 AD.
