The caves of Waitomo Formed by erosion of limestone, is 45 miles long but only 2.5 kilometers is open to the public. The vast majority remains the domain of cavers. The caves are formed by erosion of layers of limestone by underground streams. By dripping limestone containing water in the caves have stalactites (on the ceiling) and stalagmites formed (on the ground) and other fascinating rock formations. In the caves you can get a tour, but daredevils can also roping in a shaft, a rubber band through the cave of black-water rafting.
Glow worms have the remarkable ability to produce independent light. In special organs in the abdomen, in a biochemical reaction, the pigment luciferin oxidized by the enzyme luciferase in which light is produced. Under the layer of light-producing cells, is a layer of cells with small crystals, which reflect the light to the outside. In most species, the light yellow-green in color. Adult fireflies use light signals to detect each other during reproduction. Source: Wikipedia
Where can you find Waitomo?
The Waitomo Caves are located in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand. We planned our visit between Rotorua and Tongariro. Look on the map where you should be. In the next blog about New Zealand I drive on the volcanic area in Tongariro.
