Kalimantan, is the Indonesian island part of Borneo, is the most undiscovered island in Indonesia. Largely covered with forests where a large variety of animals alive. During a trip to Kalimantan introduces you to the Dayak tribes, you see orangutans swinging through the forest and you spot the funny proboscis monkey. Also living there are different types of crocodiles, snakes and birds. On Kalimantan you will not find mass tourism, which does not mean that there are no accommodation options. Life on the river
Kalimantan is not called the island of a thousand rivers for nothing. The population villages and towns built on the banks of the rivers. The rivers are used to act, to travel, to get food and meet. The easiest and sometimes the only way to discover the villages is by boat. Through a comfortable cruise you get to know the locals who live in the rainforests.
Meet the Dayak
The Dayak are the original inhabitants of Kalimantan. The Dayak tribes are divided into six groups: the Penan, Klemantan, Kenyah, Kayan, Murut and Iban. In the village of Tanjung Isuy and during a trip on the Kapuas River introduces you to traditional Dayak culture. The Dayak live with the family in the same house and live mainly by hunting, farming and fishing.
Shopping at the floating market
During a trip through Kalimantan visiting the Pasar Terapung the Martapura river should not be missed. Fresh produce this famous floating market in Banjarmasin sold by locals in boats. Banjarmasin is sometimes called the Venice of Kalimantan. A large part of daily life will take place on or near the water.
The underwater world
With a total of 29 dive spots are the islands of Derawan a dream for any diving enthusiast. A tropical paradise, white beaches, green blue sea and an amazing underwater world. During the dives you have a great chance to admire turtles, dolphins and various colorful fish up close. The waters around Derawan have 460 species of coral and 870 species of fish. One of the islands is the Kakaban rocky island in the middle of the island is a large freshwater lake. Here you will find among other harmless jellyfish, hammerhead sharks, manta rays and barracuda.
A visit to the home of the orang-utans
Kalimantan consists of 75% forest and has many natural parks. The most famous national park is the Tanjung Puting National Park. Animals such as the orangutan and the proboscis monkey along with 220 species, the residents of the park. Birdwatchers visit the Kayan Mentarang National Park; the largest rainforest of Kalimantan where 300 different birds can be spotted. In the Danau Sentarum National Park you can find flooded forests.
