Gedong Songo temple restoration was first performed by the Department of Antiquities Dutch East Indies in 1928-1929 at Gedong 1 and in 1930-1931 at Gedong 2. Followed by SPSP (Asylum Heritage and Archaeology, Heritage Preservation Hall ) Republic of Indonesia in 1977-1983 at Gedong III, IV, and V.
Gedong Songo many similarities with the temples in Dieng is located in Banjarnegara. This temple complex is made from the bottom row to the top of the hills surounding crater hot springs. Where in the Dieng temple complex also plenty of hot water crater which is not far from the center of the temple.

Construction of a temple on the hill are symmetrical and show the fusion of two local religion that embraces the belief in ancestors and the culture in which Hindu temples as the abode of the gods. The temple is made up buds similar to the stone-age culture punden berundak. Under the principle to the top, then the spirits of ancestors getting close to humans. Well, the two cultures blend together in Gedong Songo by defining as a sacrifice to the spirits of ancestors which the procession was to perform in the temple complex located on the hills.

The statues in the complex Gedong Songo made in the 8th century AD is not yet complete. Statues encountered only a few are left, like Durga (Shiva's wife), Ghanesa (Son of Shiva), Agastya (A Receipt) And two bodyguards of Lord Shiva namely Nandiswara and Mahakala temple guarding the door.
The temple is situated in the hamlet Darum, Candi, Ambarawa, Semarang regency has the same layout and architecture of the temple complex in Wonosobo-Dieng Banjarnegara. The temples are built with an irregular layout (not symmetrical) and the shape of the temple is a combination of Indian and local architecture. Gedong Songo temple size is smaller but has a more detailed decoration on the roof equally storied square. Because of these similarities, gedong Songo temple was probably built in the same period the Dieng temple, namely VII to IX century AD, during the reign of Sanjaya dynasty of ancient Mataram.

Observing Gedong Songo - as well as other major temples - like seeing the greatness of this nation in antiquity. Build a great temple of stone in altitude hilly course requires a high cultural achievement by a great nation. Realizing that we used to be a great nation, to give hope that maybe, one day we can return to a nation that triumphed again.
